2011 Marilyn A. Jackson Memorial Scholarship Award Announced

The Omaha Presbyterian Seminary Foundation in Omaha, Nebraska, is delighted to present a Marilyn  A. Jackson Memorial Scholarship recipient, Melanie YoonHee Kim, with $7,500 upon graduation and ordination as a pastor.   Ms. Kim is entering her final year at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary this fall.  She is a member of the Plymouth Presbyterian Church congregation in Pittsburgh, PA.

Ms. Kim began her higher education as a theater arts major at the University of Minnesota, and believes her undergraduate studies have served her well with “skills and experiences that translated into every subsequent employment and ministry position…”

Ms. Kim gradually fought to carve out her own individuality and learned to take pride in her Korean culture and heritage.  In her application Ms. Kim wrote, “I am deeply committed to my relationships with friends, family, coworkers, and congregational members.  We serve a relational God so it is only fitting that I work hard to prioritize the relationships that God has entrusted to me.”

An active leader on campus, Ms. Kim served as vice president of the Student Association and is a member of the Community Life Committee on campus at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.  She will serve as president of the Student Association during the coming academic year.  In addition Ms. Kim is on the leadership council for the Presbyterian Student Fellowship group and is currently a student representative for the Seminary Support Network.

The Marilyn A. Jackson Memorial Scholarship award is “to provide support for pastoral leadership to persons who are or who will be serving small Presbyterian churches at least five years with a first preference for minority students in the Synods of Lakes and Prairies, Mid-America, Rocky Mountain and the Sun.” The scholarship honors the late Mrs. Jackson, who was a long-time member of the Center Ridge Presbyterian Church near Red Oak, Iowa.
